Many older women do seem to have an innate ability to crochet, simply because it was a tradition handed down from generation to generation. In the 1840s crochet instructions began to be published and so crochet became more popular.
Another good thing about crochet symbols is that they are international, so no matter where the pattern comes from, the symbols will usually be the same. It can get intimidating, but contains enough stitches that you usually get the hang of each stitch and are ready for the next one. The library is a great source of crochet baby blanket patterns also.
Be sure that you have enough supplies to finish the job; the last thing you want to have to do when you are in the middle of a project is run out for more yarn. This is why in early patterns many of the directions seem to be missing. Do a search online for some great patterns.
